Life in Colorado is getting

more and more expensive.

High energy prices are

a significant contributor.

Coloradans are tired of paying the price for record corporate profit and greed.

As gas and electricity rates continue to increase, Colorado families are struggling to keep up with bigger bills. According to one estimate, from November 2023 to November 2024, a quarter of adults reported they could not pay at least one energy bill within the previous year.

We shouldn’t have to struggle to pay for energy to keep our lights on, heat our homes or cook our food just so utilities can take that money and continue to earn record profits year after year. Utilities must be held accountable for their profiteering off the backs of ratepayers.

OUR FOCUS

Holding utilities accountable for their corporate greed

We fight to hold utilities accountable to the customers they service, making sure they put ratepayers ahead of their own profits. Xcel Energy, Colorado’s largest utility, earns 15.4% profit on every single bill… at a time when most American businesses only make single digit profit margins. Meanwhile Xcel is asking for two price hikes to pay for more expensive fossil fuels, allowing them to send more money to their CEO and shareholders.

Ensuring data centers pay their own bills

Colorado families and local businesses shouldn’t face increasing energy bills, a higher state budget deficit, a drought, nor higher healthcare costs because of these new large-scale data centers. Instead, they should pay their fair share and use the latest technology to power their facilities.

More energy from solar and wind

Study after study has shown that renewable energy, such as solar, wind, and geothermal, is cheaper, more reliable, faster to bring online, and cleaner than relying on fossil fuels. Natural gas and oil are global commodities, tied to an unpredictable market that causes volatile price hikes that we pay for on our home energy bills. Increasing solar and wind energy means freedom from unexpected price hikes and reliable energy that’s closer to home.

How do we get there?

Ensure the state legislature passes bills that prioritize Coloradans – not shareholders of some of the wealthiest corporations in the world.

Ensure the Public Utilities Commission puts the “public,” aka you and me, first in their upcoming rulemakings.

Coloradans are sick of carrying the burden of corporate greed – especially on our energy bills.

Join us to build a Colorado for Coloradans (not corporations).

Powering an Affordable and Clean Colorado Action is a project of Utility Action Alliance.

Utility Action Alliance was founded to weaken utilities’ political power and influence. For too long, for-profit utilities have proven to be one of the main barriers to passing and implementing policies that provide resilience, increase affordability, and ensure a healthier future. At the same time, utilities make money for CEOs and shareholders by charging customers to build unnecessary pipelines and infrastructure that harm our health, environment, and ratepayers. By holding utilities accountable for their actions, we aim to significantly deplete their ability to block progress toward a cleaner and healthier future.
